LA JOLLA, Calif. The Salk Institute for Biological Studies has announced the receipt of a $42 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The grant will be used to establish the Helmsley Center for Genomic Medicine, a research center dedicated to identifying the common genetic factors shared by several chronic diseases. The center will unite scientists from many different fields to chart genomic commonalities amongst chronic diseases and how diseases affect the epigenome.

"Millions of people suffer from chronic illnesses, and these diseases are placing an unsustainable burden on our healthcare system. The Helmsley Center for Genomic Medicine will help to address this by serving as an incubator for tomorrow's clinical treatments and cures," said John Codey, a trustee for the Helmsley Charitable Trust.
