Galapagos treads into Indian waters

MECHELEN, Belgium—Galapagos NV's ser­vice division, BioFocus DPI, has signed collaborations with Indus Biosciences, a subsidiary of CiVentiChem LLC in Hyderabad, and ProCitius, a division of Sanmar Speciality Chemicals in Chennai, both providers of integrated chemistry services to life sciences companies.
 
"These strategic outsourcing agree­ments with CiVentiChem and Sanmar complement our acquisition of DPI's drug discovery operations," says Onno van de Stolpe, CEO of Galapagos. "Our therapeutic programs…and the continu­ing growth of the BioFocus DPI customer base demand access to additional chem­istry resources, and this is a timely move to ensure cost-effective capacity."
 
Galapagos notes that India offers a large resource pool of qualified chemists, and by outsourcing services, BioFocus DPI and its partners are expected to ben­efit from less costly chemistry services without sacrificing quality in the pro­cess. And Galapagos, which already has operations in seven countries, is keen to further expand its global presence by making inroads in India.
